Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Looks Wild

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are at it again.  And this time they look like they’re bringing their game up to the next level.  These new photos reveal our first looks at Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen.  Mia Wasikowska will be playing Tim Burton’s version of Alice and from what we have seen and heard so far, it looks like she is fitting into her role very well.

It’s expected to be a visually stunning film that will combine performance-capture imagery, the kind you see in Beowulf, with live-action footage. My guess is that the oddball characters from the fairy tale,  like the caterpillar (voiced by Alan Rickman), Jabberwocky (voiced by Christopher Lee), he rabbit (voice by Michael Sheen), and the Queen of Hearts, will be done in CG, while Alice and the Mad Hatter will all be real actors.  The movie will be presented in 3-D similarly to the highly successful Pixar film recently released, UP.

We have seen Tim Burton and Johnny Depp pair up before.  The first movie we saw Tim Burton and Johnny Depp together in was Edward Scissorhands, made in 1990.  Tim Burton developed this character from a drawing he made when he was child.  Edward Scissorhands was one of the all-time loveable outcasts.  The second movie they paired up together for was a box office failure called Ed Wood.  Honestly, I have never seen it so I won’t say much about it.  In 1999, Tim and Johnny paired up to create Sleepy Hollow, Burton retells the famous tale of Ichabod Crane.   The most famous remake they did together was Willy Wonka’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in 2005.  Johnny Depp played the quirky Chocolate Factory proprietor, Willy Wonka.  The movie wasn’t all that great, but if you’re going to watch it, a little weed might be just what you need to make not only the chocolate look tasty but the movie more enjoyable.  Also in 2005, they came together for the animated flick, The Corpse Bride.  The Corpse Bride brought us back memories of The Nightmare Before Christmas, another Burton classic.  Johnny Depp lent his voice for the Corpse Bride.  The most recent film, and yet another strange one that the duo worked on together was Sweeny Todd, a musical tale.  Depp, in the title role, stars as The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  A story of falsely accused crime, romance, and bloody revenge.

For this movie they are combining three different types of film; live action, animation, and stop motion.  To my knowledge it is the first time in a film that all 3 have been mixed together in one film.  Alice in Wonderland is not only an adventure of a plot, but it looks to be a cinematic adventure as well.  It is expected to hit theaters in March of 2010.  We will keep you posted when the first trailer becomes public.
