Last Minute Trip To The MTVU Woodie Awards

“That party last night was awfully crazy, I wished we taped it…” I know we all know and love that phrase from Asher Roth’s smash hit ‘I Love College,’ but those lines took on an ever more personal meaning for me last week

Now I know what you’re asking yourself; “Did you go to the most amazing frat party that made ‘Old School’ look like amateur hour? Was Frank the Tank there? Did Snoop Dogg perform? Was there KY wrestling?” Not quite…I went to the live taping of the MTVU Woodie Awards in NYC instead.

I got the call from my best buddy at 7:45pm. Actually it was a text “Yo B! Got an extra ticket to the Woodie Awards & after party. Get here AHORA!!”

So I left the beer pong game I was playing at the bar, closed my tab, hopped in a cab and sped across town to the show, which began at 8.

The venue was amazing, The Roseland Ballroom in midtown Manhattan. As you know MTV spares no expense for its awards shows and The Woodies were no different. Hors d’ouvres and cocktails for those of us who were of age, and hors d’ouvres and sodas for the youngsters. The anxious crowd was full of late teens and twenty-something’s all beautiful, all dressed to impress.  I haven’t seen that many pretty girls in one place in a long time.

My buddy and I met up with some other friends inside and positioned ourselves on the side of the stage. In between the mosh pit of fans, the bar and directly next to where the celebrities entered and exited the stage area. A strategic location for sure. Later in the evening I managed to snag a photo of and say what’s up to Will I Am of the Black-Eyed Peas as he stopped for a photo-op 5 feet in front of me.

The show was entertaining to say the least. All of your favorite bands and stars were there. Performances from Matt & Kim, Death Cab for Cutie, The Clipse, Cam’ron, Rick Ross, Passion Pit, and Dead Weather kept the place rocking all night.

Now I could end the story here and I think we could all agree that it was a successful night, but Jay-Z said it best “after the show, it’s the after-party” and that’s exactly where we headed.

A wise man once told me that “the after-party is the one you want to attend” and the Woodie Awards after-party was one for the ages. We walk in and there’s already of ton of people there partying and dancing to tunes spun by DJ 88 Keys. You know 88 Keys from his hit ‘Stay-Up/Viagra’ with Kanye West.  PS. Remember all the beautiful people I told you about who were at the show? …well they all came to after-party too. So we’re dancing, having a good time, taking full advantage of the complimentary drinks and champagne at the open bar when I notice another familiar face at the DJ booth.

I make my way over and introduce myself to DJ 88 Keys and the guy he’s standing with, the one and only Asher Roth. I tell them both that I’m a big fan and then snap a photo with Mr. Roth. And this is about the time the night reached its peak around 1:15AM on Wednesday. The Woodie Awards were tons of fun. The after-party with 88 Keys and hanging with Asher Roth for a bit further elevated the evening from pretty awesome to epic status. I have enough photos, stories, and a big enough hangover to share with anyone who cares to listen.  “That party last night was awfully crazy. I wish we taped it.”
