1. Fix your Facebook

Before you spend one more second uploading your resume to CareerBuilder or sending headshots to a “legitimate” Craigslist posting, sign on to your Facebook. While your profile may represent a fun-filled four years at the best place on earth, employers see it as a great source to find out everything about you — including why they shouldn’t hire you. Some companies merely search Facebook for your name and give up when nothig comes up, but others hire Facebook sleuthing companies that can find out everything about you, no matter how private you think you are.

But don’t freak out and deactivate your Facebook. Follow the steps listed after the jump to ensure that FB won’t get in the way of a job.

1. Change your last name to anything else. Popular choices include middle names, last initials, and the letter X.

2. Choose a tasteful profile picture that says I’m cool, fun, and professional. Try posing with a group of friends while holding a briefcase and wearing a pantsuit.

3. Change all your settings to maximum privacy. If you do everything right, even you should have a hard time finding your own profile.

4. Detag all pictures involving drinks, drugs, and debauchery. But make sure to save them to your computer first so you never forget all those times that your friends took pictures of you passed out in front of the dorms.

5. Avoid getting in pictures that involve drinks, drugs, and debauchery. While it’s hard to avoid getting in those drunken group shots and throwing up bunny ears, avoid it. It’s much easier than having to detag everything at the end of every weekend.
