It is pretty well-known that certain cities are known for certain foods. However, I’m here to break it down for you. If you are traveling this summer or happen to find yourself in one of these cities, don’t worry…you won’t be hungry!
I would like to start off with my beloved hometown, Philadelphia, home of the Philly Cheesesteak. No matter what time of day it is you can find someone who will chop up a mean steak, smother it in whiz and fried onions, and pile it all on top of a delicious Amoroso roll. I stand by Tony Luke’s, located underneath the I-95 ramp on East Oregon Avenue. Here you can get any variation of a cheesesteak you like, but be aware, ordering can be intimidating. (I like to compare it to the “Soup Nazi”)
Far from a Philly fan? You’re probably a Pittsburgh fan and the Primanti Brothers sandwich is for you! A Primanti-style sandwich means it is topped with french fries, cole slaw, and tomatoes. Molly Cody, a Penn State senior and Pittsburgh native says “I like to order the kolbassi and cheese (Primanti style) and wash it down with a cold Iron City Light Beer.” Locations include the Strip District, Oakland, Cherry Way, South Side, and Market Square, but just know…it’s cash only!
Heading to the Big Apple? New York is a city filled with great places to grab a slice of the thinnest pizza you’ll find or the creamiest cheesecake you have ever tasted. However, I would like to go ahead and say you haven’t had classic New York delicatessen if you have not visited Katz’s Deli. You can find Katz’s on East Houston Street.
Let’s jump over to the West coast to California. Cali is proud to be home of In-N-Out Burger, one of the best fast-food joints and burger’s you will ever come across. In-N-Out likes to keep it simple only offering burgers, french fries, shakes, and sodas. Don’t be misled that you are eating any fast-food burger, this place is legit. It’s affordable and a patty you don’t want to miss if you plan to visit California. Southern Cali is heavily saturated with In-N-Out Burger, but locations do reach as far North as San Francisco!
(In and Out Burger’s “Double Double”)
What would a food list be without including some type of pizza? Chicago is the nation’s capital for deep-dish pizza. Maurio Fiore, a Penn State student has had the opportunity to have a thick pepperoni slice at Lou Malnati’s.  “Every layer had its own texture and flavor and everything just culminated  in your mouth to make you rethink life.” Chicago pizza is typically eaten with a knife and fork because chances are, it will be a challenge to pick up! Lou Malnati’s has several locations in the suburbs and city.
