The Nerd’s Word: Get to Know Your Campus Library
I’m sure you’ve heard all about the vast amount of resources available in your college library. Although a lot of students don’t bother taking the time to look around and take advantage of what is available at their library on campus, the Nerd highly recommends that you do. You’ll be amazed at the work environment and resources available at your campus library, and I’m sure you’ll be able to take advantage of at least some of the resources available to you. Believe it or not, your college’s libraries are more than just great places to socialize. They’re treasure houses of information. How can you get the most out of them? Glad you asked.

1. Educate yourself on how to use the libraries’ catalogs. Most colleges offer brief, simple workshops on how to find materials.
2. Find out which, if any, online journals you can access from your school’s libraries. This might save you a trip to the stacks and some time at the copy machine.
3. Ask about special database access. Many college libraries allow free access to databases that you’d have to pay to use otherwise.

4. Find out what specialty libraries your college has. These libraries often contain materials you can’t find anywhere else, such as maps, rare books and personal collections of deceased scholars.
5. Consult with reference librarians when you’re faced with a research task. These well-trained, extremely knowledgeable people will help you find resources you never even knew existed.
6. Ask if it’s possible to make purchasing requests for specific items. Libraries often have ways of gathering student input on what they should and shouldn’t order.

With such a great deal of helpful resources at the library, it is difficult to understand why more students don’t try to take advantage of them. With the materials available, as well as the great study areas and vast amount of knowledge to be gained there, more students should be interested in checking things out at their school library. Keep it here next week as the Nerd will fill you in on when it’s time to drop a class from your schedule.
