The Nerd’s Word: How to Keep from Catching Z’s When You Should Be Getting A’s
There are so many different reasons why students have a difficult time staying awake in the classroom: late-night partying, juggling between a full-time job and school or getting ready for an early morning class. Sleeping in class can be problematic, because let’s face it – it pisses off teachers and it can adversely affect your grades. But, odds are if you are a college student then you are probably sleep deprived. Most mornings you just roll out of bed, stumble to the lecture hall class with your eyes barely open, and settle into a row of squishy seats in the classroom. One of two things happens next, you either spend your entire time in class struggling to keep your eyes open and fail to focus on any of the course material or you just fall asleep and waste both yours and the professor’s time. Here’s how to keep bright-eyed and avoid snoring away in class.

1. Wake up an extra hour early before leaving the house. This may seems to make a person more tired than ever, but believe it or not, this can help you prepared for a busy day and get energized. Also bring some music along so you can start running a couple of miles around your area to boost your strength.
2. Eat healthy portions of fruits, cereal or oatmeal as it contains low carbs. It helps your body and mind not only rejuvenated due to loss of energy but to become more focused and you will be able to pay more attention during lectures throughout the class period.

3. Restore your energy by visiting a nutritional store to buy vitamins – preferably Vitamin B which increases your energy level. You can take the tablets before heading to class and in no time, you will feel a sudden burst of energy and freshness to your body. You can get plenty of these vitamins at stores such as “GNC.”
4. Participate in class discussions whenever you feel the need of dozing off. While some students believe that most lectures from their professors is a bore, there are a few that be quite thought-provoking and grab your interests to keep you mentally responsive of what is going on in the classroom.

5. Take notes by hand. When you take notes on a laptop, you tend to be much less focused, because typing is much more automatic. You also finish faster and sometimes drift off (or start IMing people). Taking notes by hand is slower, so it makes you focus on keeping up with the lecture.
6. Get interested in the lecture. A lot of your interest in a lecture is affected by your attitude. If you go in thinking it’s going to be boring, you’ll probably be bored. Even if you’re taking a required class, try to get interested in the lecture each day; it will help you stay alert. Try to learn at least three things you didn’t know, and tell someone about them after class. It might sound kind of lame, but it will help you stay awake and learn.

If all of the above tips for staying alert in class fail, then you are guaranteed to keep your concentration on high with a healthy dose of Nerd Energy Drink. Keep it here next week to learn how to best avoid distractions while studying.
