4 Gadgets That Make Your Desk More Ergonomic

There are risks in every workplace. Of course, some are more dangerous than others. A construction site is way different in comparison to a newsroom or a cubicle space, so every workplace needs to have a unique set of safety regulations in order to keep their employees safe while on the job. This is the nature of ergonomics, which play an important role in business.

What are Ergonomics?

Ergonomics take into consideration the demands of a workplace and the abilities of the workforce. Some jobs are more demanding than others, and ergonomics determine who is right to fill the position as well at amend the demands of the job and the working conditions to meet the abilities of the employee. For example, when a theatre hires a new stagehand they not only need to prove that they know their way around knots, fly rails, and pulleys, but they need to prove that they are capable of lifting heavy objects, usually showing they can lift up to 150 lbs. Alternatively, jobs also include training sessions so that the skills an employee brings to the job are exercised and able to be used effectively.

Ergonomics in Action

Along with on the job training, the workplace employs other means of ergonomics. These can be in the form of specialized furniture or tools that help the employee complete tasks safely. Items like:

  1. Specialized Seating – Jobs that have employees sitting for hours out of their day should be supplied with chairs that offer back support and correct posture.
  2. Arm and Wrist Supports – Desk jobs that include a lot of repetitive motion like typing can be strenuous on the nerves in the arms, wrists, and hands. Too much of this strain can cause employees to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that the majority of people know about but few do anything to prevent.
  3. Proper Lighting – It’s hard to get a job done when the lighting is off. Looking at a computer screen in dim light, for example, strains the eyes and can cause big problems over time. The workplace should be well lit and provide people with extra lighting if needed.
  4. Adjustable Desks and Tables – Along with chairs that allow for good posture, the height of tables can also aid in correct posture and prevent muscle, joint, and nerve strain.

A Workplace Without Ergonomics

A workplace that doesn’t protect its employees is unsustainable. Not only is it unsafe in the short term, from day to day, but over time employees can develop conditions like poor eyesight, carpal tunnel, or joint and muscle pains. No one should have to experience the aches and pains that occur over long periods of repeated, strenuous motions, but those who do can seek solace at chiropractics like those at Graham Rehab. The lower back pain, carpal tunnel, and other inconveniences require attention as soon as they start to show up, otherwise symptoms will only be allowed to grow worse. Making adjustments to work habits and getting medical attention will keep employees healthy and happy (and able) to do their job.
