4 Ways College Students Can Make Their Apartments Environmentally Friendly

College students are on a budget, but that doesn’t mean they’re green-mindedness has to be forgotten. The good news is that dorms are inherently small, which is already a step in the right direction to go green. If being environmentally friendly is just as important as getting that degree, there are a few things college students can do. Here are 4 easy, affordable ways to go green in college.

1. Choose the Right Light

Utilize natural light whenever possible to save on electricity. If there’s not much to be had, invest in some long-lasting, environmentally green bulbs that aren’t just nicer to the environment–they’re also kinder on the eyes. This is an affordable investment that should last until graduation and makes a great impact. Leave them behind for the next student to continue the trend of green academics.

2. Go to the Farmer’s Market

College housing is often located close to farmers’ markets because college students are the ideal demographic. The food is fresh, local, seasonal and many times college students can walk or take public transportation to get there. It’s also a great way to battle the freshman 15 and support local businesses. It’s also often more affordable and a great weekly tradition with others on the same floor.

3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The trifecta of green living is never easier than on a college campus when people are constantly throwing out great things they no longer need. Practice recycling and reusing everything possible, and reduce waste by “thrifting” for free right on campus. Most colleges have a fantastic recycling program in place, so take advantage of it and use that time between classes to rinse bottles and support a green community.

4. Save on Cleaners

Cleaners like Windex are expensive and full of harmful chemicals that are hazardous to both people and the environment. Save money and go green by creating as many at-home remedies as possible. For example, mayonnaise removes water stains from wood and a simple bleach/water solution is often best for general cleaning. That leftover money can be used for more important things, like a spring break or dinner out once finals are over.

Nobody has to be rolling in the dough to practice green living, and eco-minded college students are proof. All it takes is a little know-how and dedication to enjoy an academic environment that’s green to boot. Whether a student is in environmental studies or not, it benefits everyone.
