5 Ways to Ease the Pain of a Heavy Workload

By: Erica Murphy (Syracuse University)

It’s that time again for 8 o’clock alarms, boring lectures, and calculus problems that look as confusing as Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory. The library is soon to be packed with frazzled students who can’t possibly find time for all they must accomplish. On the other side of the spectrum, this new-year brings the class of 2011 that much closer to the real world. Whether you are freaking out about failing your first paper or bombing your first interview, here are a few tips on how to tame your spent nerves and calm your racing heart.

1. Open up iTunes, put on the most ‘90s pop song you can find, and break out with the air guitar in your dorm room. Pretend like you are Ferris Bueller and jam to the sweet tunes like nothing is holding you back, especially silly college.

2. If you like a more peaceful calming experience then find a wash cloth, soak it in steaming hot water, and lay it over your eyes. I can just feel the tension loosening up already.

3. Need a good laugh? Then hit up fml.com and you will discover that there is someone out there who had a more scarring day than you.

4. Make some new friends. Walk down your dorm hallway or go over to your neighbors. Start chatting, find something in common, and use social interaction to forget about that awful three-hour lab.

5. Eat some sugar, or some salt, whatever you may prefer. Don’t look at the calories and worry about working it off later. Right now in the midst of a super insane schedule, your body can handle a little junk to settle the nerves.
