Campus Diva Presents: How Sex and the City Relates to College Life

sex and the city

I admit it…I am one of those Sex and the City fans that secretly wishes my life would end up exactly like Carrie Bradshaw’s. She is a successful journalist, who has three of the best friends a girl could ask for, and she lives in the city of my dreams……I mean her dreams. To me, Sex and the City is just a more sophisticated, Midtown version of colleges everywhere. Here are some quotes that I think illustrate why Sex and The City is college life.

#1: “I like my money where I can see it, hanging in my closet.” –Carrie Bradshaw

All I can say is ha-ha. Since coming to college I have spent so much money on clothing and shoes, and quite frankly, everything else. In college, we spend so much money on alcohol, clothing, tuition, bills, and god knows what else. We see where our money goes but our bank accounts have nothing to show for it. This is why college students are all poor and by graduation day, we are inevitably in mounds of debt. I will admit, I too like to see my money hanging in the closet, but I guess I should wait to spend so much money until I have a real job.

#2: “No matter who broke your heart, or how long it takes to heal, you’ll never get through it without your friends.” – Carrie Bradshaw

In college, you meet the people you will be friends with for the rest of your life. You go through all sorts of changes in college and sometimes you just need to a group of your best friends right by your side. College is all about finding someone you might want to spend the rest of your life with and we all hit a few bumps in the road along the way. I think all things considered, no matter what life throws at you, friends are the people you can turn too.

#3: “The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don’t. But, in the end, they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.”-Carrie Bradshaw

Ok, so clearly I think that Carrie has the best quotes that relate to life. Maybe it is because she is a journalist like me and words of wisdom are our specialty. Anyway, since being in college I have become closer to my family, especially my mother. She is like my best friend and I always turn to her when I have a problem. I think it is important to stay close to your family even when you’re in college.

Like my mother says, “When your friends walk out on you, or your boyfriend and you break up, you will always have your family.” She also tells me that I should be nicer to my sister but some things are a work in progress. And just like the second part of the quote states, sometimes you need to make a family for yourself. At school I have this big happy family of friends that I have family dinners with and just sit and chat with. Your college friends will always be the best family away from home.

#4: Miranda: You haven’t slept with him yet?

Samantha: Honey, before you buy the car, you take it for a test drive!

I know that when we all get to college, sex is a big deal. This quote is appropriate for a number of reasons. Ladies and gentlemen, just because you got really drunk at that party last night doesn’t mean that you had to sleep with a random party goer. As best said by Samantha, take the new car for a test drive, otherwise your reputation will crash and burn. There is nothing wrong with some dignity. College isn’t a competition to sleep with as many people as you can. All I have to say is don’t sleep with more people than you would ever bother telling your children about. The last thing you need them to believe is that their mom or dad is a slut.

#5: “The universe may not always play fair, but at least it’s got a hell of a sense of humor.” -Carrie Bradshaw

When in doubt, just remember college and life for that matter, is all about having a good time. No matter what life throws in our direction all that really matters is that we love and laugh a little bit. You may not get an A on your test and that person you like may not be interested in you, but as long as you surround yourself with the people who will love you unconditionally you will be fine. I like to say that if you laugh at yourself at least once a day you will feel much better and trust me, I laugh at myself all the time.

Even if you aren’t a Sex and the City fan, the wisdom and hilarity that Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda, and Carrie have shared can be applied to any situation in any location. Carrie Bradshaw always begins her articles with a question, that she mulls over and researches until she has an answer. I too have developed that journalistic trend and know leave you all with the real question about college life, Have you lived your life to its fullest or are you still playing by the books? No matter how many times that you have read articles that tell what college life should be, the fact of the matter is college is what you make of it, Sex and the City and Campus Socialite is just here to add some humor to it.
