There are many ways to spend time on campus.  With over 60 organizations at Buff State ranging from social to media, there is something out there for everyone. It seems that this year, the underclassmen aren’t too enthused about coming out of their dorms and going to explore.

I have some tips that may be able to help you out for next year. For one, find out what you like and where your niche is at. The next thing you can do is talk to your professors, staff and personnel to see what you might do to get involved. Bengal Pause is defnintely something you should not miss on Thursdays (from 12:15 to 1:40) because that’s when everyone comes out and set tables to give you-the student a chance to learn more about the organization. Bengal Pause is also a great way to find out about upcoming events and attend organizations General Interest meetings in the Student Union.

On Saturday April 24th, the Caribbean Students Organization at Buffalo State College celebrated their annual Caribash. For those of you who do not know what Caribash is, it an annual event in which an artist from the Caribbean comes to perform. The event this year  Caribash was held in the sports arena on campus. The early warms were brought on by Brooklyn’s own Farenheight Crew consisting of the Soca Warrior DJ A-Hop, Dancehall/Reggae DJ’s Richie Rich, Geniuz and Goose. After they got the students pumped up, In4ahred Sounds hopped on the one’s and two’s to play conscious reggae and jump into R&B and Hip-Hop.

My NYC heads where you at? I know for a fact that those who live in the Tri-State area definitely have came across Hot 97 or Power 105.1. I have been listening both of these Radio Station for as long as I can remember and while both of them are similar, each of them has their own distinct differences that make them different-Caribbean wise…We just have to know where it first started off though and that is with Dahved Levy over at 107.5 WBLS playing some good reggae, soca and calypso music.

On Friday, April 9th, 2010 the Caribbean Students Organization held their weekly General Interest Meeting. When it comes to student organizations, depending on how many positions there, everyone has an agenda. This General Interest Meeting however was not like the rest. The organization touched on the top Caribbean news that has been circling the airwaves for the past few weeks: Jamaican artists Beenie Man, Adonia, Mavado, Bounty Killer and selector Ricky Trooper had their visas revoked by the US.

You are chillin’ in your house one day and you decide to listen to music. But wait, you heard everything on your play list before. What do you do to get the latest in music?

Depending on the genre of music, certain songs come out from a weekly to monthly basis. Since I’m a Caribbean music fiend, I’m always on the lookout for the latest tune or Riddim. Don’t know what a Riddim is? Riddim is an instrumental version of a song which applies to Caribbean music in general ranging from Calypso to Soca and even Reggae. Riddim is a Jamaican patois term derived from the English word “Rhythm” which can incorporate beats, melodies and heave bass lines.

It’s that time of the year at Buff State and the students are off to the races to see who can live in the best and convenient dorm. Those who are upperclassmen and the veterans here at the college know that such a task is daunting and stressful. The biggest controversy at hand now is the new online system to live in Moore Complex for the academic year.

For those of you who are either attending BSC or are from different universities around the nation, let me familiarize you with Buffalo State College’s Moore Complex. It is an apartment style dorm that consists of two single rooms and a shared room for two people apartments, three single room apartment, or two room apartments.  To live in Moore Complex you must have one of following qualifications: you must be at junior level standing or higher (57 credits or more), must have lived on campus for four or more semesters or must be of 21 years of age or higher. The only exception is Family College in which your dependent child must live with you.

Recently  I’ve been put on to  to something that I would have never thought imaginable and that is mixing Reggae, Soca, Dancehall with Baltimore Club music. At first I couldn’t help but initially think is that even possible? If anything, the first person to put me on to Baltimore Club was my friend who is a DJ and I couldn’t help but like what I heard. I also asked myself why this type of music could not be played  in New York City but then it hit me, certain areas play certain type of music and New York City really isn’t one of them. This is where DJ Big Rob comes in.

Greek Life is an essential and incentive part of college life to enhance the college experience. Not only do you develop a bond for life, you make a difference within the community that you are in to give back. This fraternity definitely gave back to the collegiate community as a form of their appreciaiton during their founders week.

On Thursday, March 18th, Beta Sigma Kappa Afro-Latino Fraternity, Inc. presented a program at Buffalo State College entitled “Hip-Hop vs. Religion”. The program facilitated by Brother Dishem Ramnath discussed the similarities between the two entities such as music, executive positions, popularity and literature to name a few. While the program presented interesting facts and viewpoints, it definitely sparked the curiosity of the people that came out.

When you think of Gyptian, what comes to mind? I hope you aren’t thinking the country located in the continent of Africa because this Jamaican Reggae artist is taking on the world by storm!

Born Windell Edwards, Gyptian has been on the music scene since 2005, however his first album “My name is Gyptian” was released in 2006 and included tunes such as “Mama” and “Serious Times”. His sophomore album “I can feel your pain”, released just two short years ago earned him some good street credit because he always stayed true to his conscious roots but this time, with more of an R&B flow to it.
