Big Boss Sounds Off: $1.50 Bud Lights and the Cat Who Stalks the Night

by: Tony Peralez (UTSA)

So this week I headed to The Cantina to meet up with a few friends for a few brews. I had not been in quite a while and when I got there I had remembered why; the line was nuts to get in and the line at the bar was even more ridiculous. Bad idea Tony, what were you thinking?

Being the clever man that I can be sometime, I told the door guy that I knew the band (which I kind of did) and I got walked in past the 20 poor saps waiting at the door. The set that night was DJ Catwalk with Mike Gomez, an awesome duo of hip hop spins to the beat of a spastic drummer who knew how to get down. But we’ll get to that in a few.

Big Boss Presents: A Terry Urban Beat

By: Tony Peralez (UTSA)

Thanks to my little brother and his facebook, I have stumbled on to musical genius once again. Naturally, after some first amazing sounds from this artist, it was clear that it must be shared with my public.

Terry Urban is an amazing self taught DJ (a complete rarity by the way), but do not be mistaken, this man to his true core is close to the epitome of artistry. He cuts, mixes, and generates some of the greatest and most creative mash ups that we as music fans could ever think of hearing.

Quick Tips To Slim Down

by: Ann Redus (UTSA)

I’m always on the lookout for something that’s going to make my waist a little bit smaller. I tend to read health and fitness magazines or articles on the Internet for what not to eat and what exercises to do. I’ve compiled a need-to-know list for everyone trying to slim down before you hit the sand this spring.

Weekend in The DFW Metroplex

The weekend of February 12-14, 2010 the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex hosted the 59th Edition of the NBA All-Star and All Star festivities. This year all star weekends events were held at the American Airlines Center and at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. While the actually game was held in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Miami Heat Point Guard Dwyane Wade surely enjoyed finishing first in North Texas once again. The last time this occurred was in Game 6 in the 2006 NBA Finals when he and former teammate Shaq won the NBA Title and D-Wade named NBA Finals MVP. The Heat’s signature star added to his Lone Star State legend with a dazzling performance Sunday night on Valentine’s Day, worthy of the largest basketball crowd in the history of the world.

U2’s lead singer Bono founded a non-profit organization called the One Campus Challenge in Fall 2007.  Bono’s idea for starting up ONE is to have college student’s nation wide to do clothing drives and weekly competitions on campus for students to sign and send to government leaders and to become one step closer by ending poverty in places from Africa to Haiti. From the beginning, ONE has been successful with have a competition for students to attend the yearly Power 100 Conference in Washington, DC and at the end of the school year five individual students randomly selected to head over for a once in a life time trip to Africa. One partners up with other non-profit organizations from Tom Shoes, Oxfam, the Red Campaign and the Feed Bag Campaign.

I attend the third-annual ONE “Power 100 Summit” in Washington, D.C. earlier this month after being recognized as a national student leader in activism against extreme poverty and preventable disease. The weekend culminated in a Lobby Day, where students asked member of Congress to fund programs proven to reduce extreme poverty, improve global health, and ensure access to food for millions of people.

Ways to Keep You Entertained During Class

no thumb

By: Ann Redus (UTSA)

Every semester I always manage to get one of those classes that I just loathe going to. I find it absolutely pointless to go to a class where the teacher feels the need to take attendance and read straight off the PowerPoint the entire time. FML. Get me out of here.

I’ve compiled a couple of activities you can do during class that will keep you from going crazy. All you’ll need is an Internet connection, preferably an iPhone, but the Internet will do.

…Like a Fat Kid Love Cake

Recently in the past couple of weeks I’ve been doing a little bit of research for a research based class I’m taking. We have to commit the entire semester to researching one particular event or study so that we can develop our own study and review of the results.

I myself am an incredibly active person with some history of family health problems, so I decided to focus on a topic that was health oriented. Childhood obesity is an awful disease that is all too easily perpetuated.

Y-Vodka: Created By College Students For The Young Professional

by: Ann Redus (UTSA)

Back in early 2008, UTSA students, Brett Cohen and Justin Reitmeyer, came up with the brilliant idea to start their own line of vodka. No one would have ever imagined that less than a year later Y-Vodka was going to be hitting the bar scene in San Antonio… haaaard. No joke, there’s not a bar around town that doesn’t serve it, and if they don’t serve it – no one wants to go there anyway.
