Why you should do yourself and those around you the favor of getting ready in the morning…

I don’t do 8 A.M.’s because I take too long to get ready. I learned that lesson my freshman year the hard way and have never scheduled a class before 9 A.M. again. I’m not saying you should get all dolled up runway-style for Sociology 101, but at least have some human decency. Whether you like it or not, there are some things that every girl should do before leaving her dorm and jetting off to class in the morning. I’m not talking the obvious brush your teeth and throw on a clean bra. I mean little niceties that go a long way. You never know who you’re going to bump into on your first day of classes, so why not be prepared? You may end up in a class with a professor who can write you a great recommendation letter in the future to help you score your dream internship, or even the cutest guy on campus. And let’s face it- you’re not going to turn either of their heads if you look like a slob. Here are a few quick tips that will help put you at the head of your class (and not to mention be one of the prettiest).

Brush your hair– I know you all own an assortment of brushes. There are round ones to create volume when you give yourself a blowout and flat paddle brushes for when you are straightening. Between your brushes and your combs, there is no reason to not run one through your hair before you dart out the door. You don’t need a red carpet look for a day in the library, but you do need something that doesn’t look like a rat’s nest on the top of your head. I don’t care how easy it is. It is ugly. Clip it back if it’s acting that unruly.

Keep your sweats to your self– Juicy Couture sweat suits? They were cute when you were 13 and liked getting your clothes in the same packages as your favorite candy bars (1. Their marketing team is brilliant. 2. You shouldn’t be eating candy bars). But the matching velour zip-up hoodie & sweat pant? It crosses the line of hideous. Yes, the Victoria’s Secret PINK Collegiate collection is SUPER cute. But it’s not much better. I believe in comfort. I do not, however, believe in highlighting your assets with words like JUICY. I don’t compromise good fashion for something supremely atrocious. Invest in some American Apparel leggings and oversized sweaters. Don’t wear them with UGGS or flip flops (even if they’re Tory Burch). And please leave your college hoodies for the walk to the gym or around your room when you’re by yourself.

Spritz yourself– no, not everyone gets up 2 hours before their first class to get ready. And no, not everyone is like a boy and can take a shower and still be ready within 15 minutes. Find a light body spray and spritz yourself before you go. Stash it in your purse or in your car. I’ve grown to love the roll-on perfume tubes. They’re easy and don’t add too much extra weight to your day bags.

Wear mascara– again, not everyone has time to go through full hair & makeup when you’re only on 4 hours of sleep. Make sure you wash your face every night before you go to bed (or morning, whichever your bedtime happens to fall) and start with a fresh face every time. Mascara and a little bit of gloss add enough something to brighten up your face, even if you’re in a hurry.

Gabrielle Chanel once said, “I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little- if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be pretty as possible for destiny.” You never know what the day has in store for you when you get off the right side of the bed in the morning. Besides, you would be silly to disagree with the woman who founded eternal style.

Ciao for now. Xoxo
