Good Idea, Bad Idea: Stainless Steel Ice Cubes

On paper, this is a brilliant idea: take some of that blue gel you find in ice packs, throw it in some metal cubes, freeze them, and toss them in your drink. It’s not so different from other similar products, except that these are made of stainless steel. So I ask you, socialites – are these a good idea or a bad idea? Before you decide, let’s examine the pros and cons.

Pros: So the first upside to these babies are that they’re reusable, potentially for eternity. No more having to go through the messy, wet process of making ice cubes the old-fashioned way (unless you’re lucky enough to have an ice maker, in which case – fudge off). The other, and probably most important pro of the metal ice cubes is that they’ll never water down your drink. Throw them in whatever you want, they’ll never ruin the taste by melting into water.

Cons: On the other hand, they are made of metal, which DOES have it’s own distinct taste. I don’t know about you, but I kind of rather have a diluted drink than a drink that tastes like it came fresh from a stuffty lecture hall water fountain. Just saying. There’s also the matter of the cubes breaking open and getting nontoxic goo (it’s not dangerous, but it’s still disgusting) all in your drink. Then you’re out $25 and all pissed that some slimy blue stuff ruined your drink. Then again, I don’t see any seams on the cubes, or even know how they get the gel in there in the first place, so I very well can’t assume that they’d burst.

Conclusion: So what are your thoughts? Sound them off in the comments. My humble opinion is that these bad boys aren’t really worth $25 when you’ve got perfectly good OG ice sitting in your freezer. But if you’re all neurotic about watered down drinks and have the dough to throw around, then I’d say go for it (buy them here). If they aren’t what you expected (or you find out that you don’t like the taste of steel), your ice tray will still be sitting there, and you can resell them or throw them out or use them as a paper weight, or something.
