Socialite Approved Releases (November 7th – November 11th, 2011)

Movies: The Immortals (11/11/2011)

Those who loved 300 (everyone and their mother) can now rejoice. Relativity Media has now created what looks like basically a carbon copy, with all the slow-motion, gawdy special effects and ancient Greek violence we’ve come to love. Oh yeah, and it’s all in 3D. King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) goes on a bloody tirade through Greece, raping and pillaging through his entire path in search of something called The Bow of Epirus. A regular dude named Theseus (Henry Cavill) finally decides that enough is enough, and leads a small band of followers (sound familiar?) against the King’s armies, who are willing to fight to the death (thought so). Sure, it sounds exactly like 300, but hey, is that such a bad thing. We loved 300 because it was cool, not because it was particularly inventive. All-out-war, sword and lance battles in 3D, underdog vs. evil king’s army. I’m there.

Video Games: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (11/08/2011)

It’s November, which means one more holiday left before we can go into all-out Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza mode, and the newest chapter in the best shooter series of all time is out right in time for the season. Yeah, like anyone is actually going to wait for Christmas. A female member of the Campus Socialite Team asked me if new Call of Duty games came out every year. It sure seems that way doesn’t it, but I can’t think of another Video Game series (non-sports related) that releases so many frickin games while never coming close to disappointment. Medal of Honor, Gears of War, Halo. All great in their own right, but nothing can stop the call to duty. I’ll admit, I haven’t done much research, mostly because I want to go in ignorant, fresh and ready to be pleasantly surprised. Check out the trailer above if you need to. But really, all you need to know is the words Call of Duty will appear on the box. The rest is a given.
