It is nearly the home-stretch of the spring term and students everywhere are beginning to wear down from the pressures and stressors from the ongoing semester. But the busy work is not the only chain weighing them down. The school year’s accumulation of skunked beer, boxed wine and plastic bottled liquor is surely making everyone a little nutty!
I understand college budgets tend to limit students to these pitiful excuses for beverages, but here at The Campus Socialite we feel everyone deserves to reward themselves now and then. That is why we put together a collection of the finest beer, whiskey, rum, and wine that, although more expensive than Natty Ice, is still within a reasonable budget.
BEER: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
This India pale ale is a king among princes. Its distinctive, hoppy taste may take a little while to get used to. After a couple, though, it is tough to find a beer that can compare. The bitterness of the hops is balanced out by a rich blend of malt that results in a refreshing, unique flavor. 90 Minute is only available in 28 states across the nation. It is packaged in boxes of 4 and the price ranges between $10-$16. As stated earlier, it might be a little more expensive then the yellow beer most are used to, but the payoff will be well worth it! The Dogfish Brewery brews multiple other beers, each with their own personality. The Campus Socialite has yet to find one that disappoints.
Other favorites: Troeg’s Nugget Nectar, Ithaca’s Cascazilla Red Ale, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout
WHISKEY: Buffalo Trace
I know many college students could care less about the quality of their liquors. Bottom-shelf whiskey is usually sufficed if it’s mixed with enough cola or juice, but the price ($20-$25) and the award-winning quality of this bourbon cannot be ignored. This Kentucky straight shares many similarities with common whiskeys, the like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam, but is much, much smoother. Even inexperienced bourbon drinkers can enjoy this smooth-sippin’ whiskey on the rocks!
Other Favorites: Basil Hayden, Woodford Reserve, Gentleman Jack, and of course, Jameson Irish whiskey (These are a pricey, sorry)
RUM: Sailor Jerry’s Navy Spiced Rum
Captain Morgan seems to be everyone’s favorite rum now-a-days; so if you enjoy a Captain n’ coke every once in a while then you will absolutely love Sailor Jerry. This 92-proof rum is comparable in price to its counter part, Captain Morgan, but is darker in color and stronger in flavor. It can be deliciously mixed with cola or Dr. Pepper, but have a forewarning: If you drink it like the Captain it will fuck you like a Sailor.
Other Favorites: Captain Morgan Private Stock, Appleton Rum (Jamaica’s native rum)
WINE: Hazlitt Red Cat
A connoisseur of wine is not going rank this red wine among the finest wines of the world, but it is a wine of its own. This fruity, semi-sweet wine is easy to drink and does not require an acquired palette to enjoy. Therefore, it is very popular among the college ladies! Guys, it would not be a bad idea to keep a bottle of this on hand for a late-night visitor! The Red Cat jingle explains it all. Before sampling this treat at its winery, everyone must sing this infamous chant: Red Cat! Red Cat! It’s an aphrodisiac! Red Cat! Red Cat! It’ll get you in the sack!!
Other Favorites: Hazlitt White Cat, Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, any of the Yellow Tails
