The Game by Neil Strauss Gets Green Light as a Movie

What happens when Super Nerds try to apply evolutionary psychology to trying to get it in? The Game happens. The book was released 6 years ago with the tag line “Penetrating The Secret Society of Pick Up Artists” and follows hopelessly awkward Neil Strauss as he learns “The Game” and deals with all the drama that comes a long with it. The extremely popular, and moderately useful book, will now be turned into a movie.

I read the book and it was actually pretty interesting. I didn’t need to know that if I made fun of Girl’s shoes they would sleep with me, and I sure as hell didn’t need to be told by a dude who calls himself “Mystery” how to be an Alpha Male. But what most people don’t realize though is the book is not explicitly instructional. While it does contain all the instruction and theory that a real Pick-Up Artist book would, it’s actually a journalistic investigation into their world. A bunch of virgins who invented a theory that turned them into Giglos overnight? What’s more cinema friendly than that?

Like I said, the book follows Neil Strauss as he is actually being instructed on how to becomes a Pick Up Artist. His teacher, “Mystery,” is the inventor of a “Flaw Proof” system in which he tells girls stories, makes fun of their clothing, does magic tricks to demonstrate his value, and then pushes and pulls them into sleeping with him. It sounds insane, but if Neil Strauss’s pen doesn’t lie, the two get with more girls than a Frat House on Saturday night. Then tragedy strikes, or more like a lot of drama. Either way, I won’t ruin the story for all you movie-goers. It may not be Shakespeare but it might be worth $10. We’ll see who’s starring, and who’s directing.

On the production note, the only thing announced and most-likely decided thus far is that MGM will produce the movie, and the script will be written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the brains behind A Solitary Man, Ocean’s 13, and The Girlfriend Project. Of those three, I’ve seen one, and it was basically just a carbon copy of the two before it. Guess which one? Writers only go so far anyway. The important thing is the Director and we won’t know that little piece of information until the screen-play has been rewritten three times. Until then, my hope is for the best.
