Throwback Thursdays: Yomega Yo-Yos, Fruit String Thing, and Street Sharks

Editor’s Note: This is going to happen every Thursday for the rest of eternity, so get used to us dredging up things from the past or you can just get out.

Welcome to the column where we aim to overwhelm you with nostalgia. Each week we’ll be picking out three things from the past to shove in your face, with the hope that you’ll identify them with your childhood and come back for more the following week. On the plate for this week? Fruit String Thing, Yomega Yo-Yos, and Street Sharks. Ringing any bells? Don’t worry, you’ll remember soon enough.

Yomega Yo-Yos

Fuck Duncan yo-yos. When Yomega came into the picture, yo-yos were brought to a brand new level. All the yo-yos had “brains” of different kinds and you could do mad tricks with them because they “slept” longer than normal yo-yos. The above commercial features the power brain, which was more powerful than any other brain I guess? Personally, I had a red brain that lit up, as well as an x-brain. That’s right, two yo-yos – but I still couldn’t do a single trick…fudge my life.

Fruit String Thing

This tasty lunchtime treat all but completely disappeared from the Earth. It’s like Betty Crocker tried to completely erase its existence. Why? I’m still not sure. Go ahead, try googling it. All you’ll get is a bunch of small, pixelated pictures and endless threads inquiring about their demise. All that remains is the above commercial. How I miss those plastic-like red shapes on waxy cardboard. I actually don’t even remember what they tasted like, but I still miss them.

Street Sharks

Street Sharks totally tried to capitalize on the Ninja Turtles’ fame, which is lame. Nevertheless, a show about four dudes who mutate into man/shark hybrids and fight crime whilst simultaneously destroying city streets with no regard for the everyday taxpayer is pretty baller. Obviously, the Hammerhead guy was the best. Duh.

Tune in next week for more Throwback Thursday adventures!
