Yes We Can…Have a Tea Party: Quick Notes on Election 2010

by The Campus Investor

I was in Penn Station this past weekend and saw one of the best Halloween costumes I had seen in a while, it was of Jimmy McMillan, here’s a picture.

Remember him? The Rent Is Too Damn High! Even though many people may simply scoff at the notion of taking this guy seriously, he is stating a very clear message. And a message that most people agree with: The Rent Is Too Damn High! Politicians like to make things complicated so voters can get confused and just vote for whoever other people tell them to, but this guy is blunt enough for us to understand. Anyway, I’m not voting for him but at least we young adults take notice!

Today is Election Day in America and from my perspective it is extremely important that we get out and vote. The 2010 elections are dubbed “mid-term” due to them being held two years after the Presidential election. Democrats hold the majority in both the House & Senate but it is shaping up to be an interesting & competitive election day given the newfound resurgence from Republicans. Although some Republicans are more radical than others (i.e., NY Gubernatorial Candidate Carl Paladino) it is still important that all Americans have strong & well-rounded candidates.

Democrats are hoping they see a strong turnout at the polls and in turn a vote of confidence for President Obama’s current administration. It seems like just yesterday we were all heading out to the polls to hang our hopes & dreams on Obama’s “Yes We Can” catch phrase. In my opinion the President seems to be in a lose/lose situation these days, he hasn’t been able to jump start the economy enough for everyone to be happy and many of his fellow Democrats are scared for their own seats (or jobs) so they have distanced themselves from his policies.

So why should you care or even pay attention? Well if you reside in California, Arizona, Oregon & South Dakota, the legalization of marijuana will be on the ballot as an amendment. Imagine strolling down the USC or Arizona campus with a joint in hand not having to worry about any repercussions….just saying!

Also, certain states have took issue with President Obama’s healthcare bill and are seeking to ratify their state constitutions to prohibit individuals and businesses from being required to participate in the system. These states are Arizona, Colorado & Oklahoma.

So when you wake up this morning……or afternoon, be sure to get up and go vote. EVERY VOTE COUNTS, I don’t care what people say; thankfully we don’t live in a country where elections are all that corrupt. Even if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your family, many of whom were immigrants and came to this country for the ability to live amongst a democracy and with a sense of true freedom.
