Today, Facebook is supposed to roll out the newest addition to the king of social networks: email. That’s right, if everything goes as expected, by the end of the day you will have a @fb.com email address to go along with your entire life on Facebook.
‘Project Titan,’ the code name for the mail service, has been rumored for quite some time, but the official announcement is expected today at a special invite-only event hosted by the networking giant.
The Facebook team has been referring to their new service as the “Gmail Killer.” Uh-oh, I smell the sweet sweat of competition in the air. If everything goes as planned, 500 million people will automatically receive a new email address by the end of the day…with no sign-up necessary, I believe.
This spells out huge trouble for Google, whose Google Talk just doesn’t get the kind of usage as Facebook chat. With Facebook moving into the email market, Google might have to come up with something groundbreaking in order to keep people coming to their Gmail accounts, because Facebook email sounds remarkably convenient.
