Go Green or Go Home (Pre-St. Patrick’s Day Preparations)

no thumb

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, it’s no surprise some students have already begun their celebratory festivities. If you creep on Facebook, you’ll see the green shirts have been taken out and worn. Stores like Spencer’s have obnoxious, inappropriate T-shirts on sale for St. Patty’s Day and even bars have jumped on the pre-St. Patty’s Day celebrations bandwagon.

Since the official holiday is only one day long and falls during the week, why wouldn’t students use both the weekend before and after to celebrate? Here’s how you can start your St. Patty’s Day festivities today.

Last Minute Spring Break Preparations

no thumb

So you’ve been working out and eating less to get that ultimate beach body, while you’re drinking more and more to build your tolerance so as to not look like a fool who can’t hold your alcohol. Why? All for a lovely week we college students look forward to every spring called Spring Break.

Kind of like Vegas, what happens during Spring Break stays on Spring Break and doesn’t count back in real life. You’ll be hammered for seven nights and eight days and you’ll only remember like 70% of what happens because of cameras – and hopefully all of the memories are still pictures and not video…

But now with Spring Break just around the corner – literally some schools are even on break already – are you sure you’re all set to go? To make sure you have the ultimate trip planned, read on after the jump.

Why Ethnic Foods Make You Fat

no thumb

“You are what you eat” is a common phrase we’ve all been hearing since we were able to reach our hands into the cookie jar. But what about, “You weigh how much you eat?” I definitely would vote to have this phrase trend on Twitter.

you are what you eat

This is especially true while you’re abroad, or eating foods of distinct ethnicity. Keep reading to find out why.

Why It’s So Hot to Speak a Foreign Language in Bed

no thumb

hot-girl-lips

“Voulez vous couchez avec moi ce soir?”

Um, yes, please. Who wouldn’t want to make out with the person who said that – even if they don’t know what it means? It just sounds so much hotter and sexier than “I want you to come to bed with me,” which is the translation. But in America, especially on a college campus, how many people are going to seduce you with phrases in foreign tongues? Not as many as one would hope. But here’s the good news: if you’ve studied abroad and met some hot natives in the country of your temporary residence, you’ve probably learned a few phrases to take back to America. And here’s the better news: if you break them out, lots of people will want you, and they will want you badly.

Best Late Night Munchies – Freddy’s in Delaware

no thumb

It’s true, the drunk college student craves carbs. Carbs and grease. I don’t know why, but if you think about all your late-night food binges, I bet they all have some sort of bread and/or cheese factor. Most of the time, it’s pizza because it’s fast, it’s easy, and, obviously, it’s delicious. Although we do have some decent pizzerias by University of Delaware, they aren’t the hot spots for after-bar or after-party munchies.

That’s when you go to Freddy’s/Wings to Go, located on Main Street (surprise) on the way home for most of the off-campus kids. Freddy’s stays open until 2 a.m. during the week and 3 a.m. on Saturdays. I know all you non-Delaware students are thinking, “Whatever that’s early.” But in Delaware, the bars close at 1, so 2 or 3 for food is pretty decent. And what does Freddy’s have to offer? Everything. Delicious.

A Day in Morocco For The Sheltered American Girl

no thumb

Clarification: I am not sheltered. I am very cultural – I travel, hit up museums, read…I’m a journalist, so I know what’s going on – but I don’t like the outdoors. Let’s put it this way: My idols are women like Audrey Hepburn and Gwen Stefani. Sure, I’ll climb a tree or cliff dive on vacation every now and then, but camping was never my thing. Ever. So what happens when you put a girl like me in the northern part of Morocco for a day?

I’ll tell you…in all honesty, it was the scariest day of my life.

Drag Your Ass to Kate’s in Delaware

no thumb

So it’s Saturday night around dinner time in Newark, Delaware. You’ve got friends from home visiting and you can’t wait to give them a dose of the way University of Delaware students party. You know, show them why you wake up nine times out of 10 with seven different stamps and numbers on your hand and a camera trail of evidence of what you did the night before. Where are you going to take them? Klondike Kate’s Restaurant and Saloon, of course!

See, if it were Tuesday, you’d have the option of going to Kildare’s for karaoke or the Deer Park for Jefe’s acoustic performance of your favorite songs, but it’s not Tuesday. Wednesday, you’d go to Iron Hill for a dance party, and for the same reason on Friday you’d go to Timothy’s.

But everyone over the age of 21 in Delaware knows that Thursdays and Saturdays there is only one place to be, and that’s Kate’s.

Study Abroad: Rome

no thumb

On your college’s study abroad trip, you’re walking through a modern city with stores and restaurants lining both sides of the cobble-stoned street, and then you turn the corner. In most cities, another street with stores and restaurants would appear, but not in Rome. This is what makes Rome so unique and amazing. You will be eying a designer bag in an Italian store’s window, turn down what seems to be an alley, and find yourself at the Colosseum or the Spanish Steps.

During the day, Smart cars and Vespas (similar to mopeds, used the way Americans use motorcycles) whizz by following no explicit street directions. At night, a majority of the city sleeps. However, if you are planning a trip to Rome, I promise you – having been there twice – you will have the time of your life.
